Introducing DOXA’s English Newsletter
Reportage and analysis from and on Russia. We cover everything from war and rising authoritarianism to inequality, discrimination, and the climate crisis.
Hello! We are DOXA Journal, an independent media outlet devoted to promoting underrepresented voices from Russia. Since our inception as a grassroots student publication eight years ago, we have grown into one of the largest independent Russian media outlets, with a special focus on social and political issues that matter to younger generations.
From human rights violations to environmental concerns, from the war in Ukraine to the oppression of LGBTQIA+ individuals and ethnic minorities, DOXA’s work focuses on the difficulties of life in Russia under increasingly authoritarian conditions.
Why an English Newsletter?
While DOXA has long been a trusted source for Russian readers navigating censorship, we recognize the need to broaden the conversation. Russia’s challenges—discrimination, inequality, repression—are not isolated; they reflect global patterns. As the world becomes increasingly unified in its struggles against climate disasters, authoritarianism, far-right ideologies, and oligarchic control, we’ve decided to launch an English-language platform.
Much of the analysis of Russia frames the country within broader geopolitical debates, explaining its actions as a response to other global powers. This approach often overlooks the voices of ordinary people. With this newsletter, we aim to provide fresh perspectives that go beyond Moscow. We will highlight the stories of individuals directly affected by the Kremlin’s draconian policies and explore how Russia’s issues connect to wider global trends, challenging myths and generalizations along the way.
What to Expect
Original pieces: In-depth explainers and reported pieces on topics often overlooked in English-language media.
Adapted content: English translations of some of our most impactful Russian-language articles, tailored to an international audience.
Guest perspectives: Essays and opinion pieces from researchers, activists, and other experts offering critical insights into Russian society and politics.
Our Mission
Despite facing state persecution—including the arrest of our editors, the blocking of our website, and our designation as “undesirable” by the Russian government—we continue to grow and reach new audiences. Launching an English-language newsletter is another step in our mission to promote dialogue and action.
In Russia's media landscape, we stand out as one of the few outlets amplifying marginalized voices—LGBTQ+ activists, advocates of decolonial movements, and leftist thinkers. More than a news source, we provide nuanced analysis and foster healthy debate on complex issues, resisting the pull of binary narratives.

P.S. If you are a scholar or freelance journalist with a focus on Russia and the former Soviet Union, please feel free to send us a pitch. We are also actively looking to collaborate with organizations and individuals who share our commitment progressive, and marginalized perspectives. Whether you’d like to cross-promote or partner on a project, we’d love to hear from you.
